Grocery Snitch · Legal
Privacy Policy
Effective date: July 5, 2026 · Last updated: July 5, 2026
Who we are: Menu Analytics, LLC, a Florida limited liability company doing business as Grocery Snitch ("Grocery Snitch," "we," "us"), the maker of the Grocery Snitch mobile app and the grocerysnitch.com website (together, the "Service"). Contact: jdouglas@grocerysnitch.com.
This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your choices. The Service is offered in the United States only.
1. The short version
- We help you find low grocery prices by pooling prices that users capture from receipts and barcode scans into a shared database.
- Your contributed prices are shown to other users WITHOUT your name attached.
- We do not sell your personal information. If we ever offer market-level price statistics to businesses, they would be aggregated and de-identified — data about prices at stores, not about you, and not capable of identifying you.
- Receipt photos can contain sensitive details (a card's last 4 digits, a loyalty number, your name). We keep them private, don't store the raw text we read off them, strip location metadata from images, and delete them when you delete your account.
- The Service is for adults 18 and older (§9).
- You can delete your account and personal data from the app at any time (§6).
2. Information we collect
You give us:
- Account info — email, an optional username, and a password (stored hashed by our auth provider). Creating an account requires confirming that you are at least 18 years old.
- Receipt images — photos of grocery receipts you choose to submit, and the store, date, total, and item prices read from them. Receipts may incidentally contain your name, a payment card's last 4 digits, or a loyalty-program number.
- Barcode/UPC scans and prices you enter or confirm.
- Things you add — pantry items, recipes (including any you import from a web link, and photos or notes you attach), and shopping lists.
- Waitlist email — if you sign up on the marketing website (plus a one-way hashed form of your IP address, used only to limit spam).
Collected automatically / with permission:
- Approximate location — if you allow it, used at the moment you ask to find stores near you and to check you're in our service area. We do not store your device's coordinates as a profile of where you go, and we strip GPS metadata from images you upload. You can decline; the app falls back to a default area.
- Contribution activity — the prices you've added and the points/badges you've earned.
- Limited technical/diagnostic data through our hosting provider (e.g. server logs). We do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
3. How we use information
- To run the core feature: read prices off your receipts/scans and add them to the shared price database so everyone can find the cheapest store.
- To show you comparisons, your pantry/recipes/lists, and your contribution stats/badges.
- To detect and prevent fraud, fake prices, and abuse (e.g. rate limits, integrity checks).
- To communicate with you about the Service. Waitlist and beta emails identify Grocery Snitch / Menu Analytics, LLC as the sender and include a working unsubscribe link; unsubscribe requests are honored promptly. We don't send marketing email you haven't asked for.
- To comply with law and enforce our Terms.
4. The crowdsourced price database (how your contributions are used)
When you submit a price (from a receipt or a scan), the price, product, store, and date become part of our shared database and are shown to other users to power comparisons. Other users do not see your identity attached to a price — contributor identity is hidden from the comparison views. If you delete your account, your contributed prices are kept but anonymized (the link to you is removed) so the shared data others rely on remains intact.
5. Who we share information with (service providers)
We share data with vendors who process it on our behalf, under contract, only to provide the Service:
| Provider | What they receive | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase (hosting/backend) | Account data, your private content, receipt images | Database, authentication, file storage |
| OCR.space | Receipt images | Reading text/prices off the receipt |
| Anthropic | Product/label images | Image understanding for product data |
| Open Food Facts, USDA | A scanned barcode number only (no personal info) | Product name/size lookup |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | A bot-challenge token (website) | Spam prevention on signup |
We may also disclose information to comply with law, to protect rights/safety, or in connection with a business transfer (e.g. merger or acquisition). We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
6. Your choices and rights
- Delete your account and personal data in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account). This hard-deletes your account, receipt and recipe images, pantry, recipes, lists, and saved data; contributed prices are retained anonymized (§4), and we keep a minimal record that you accepted our Terms (your account ID, the Terms version, and when — §8). If you can't access the app, email jdouglas@grocerysnitch.com from your account email and we'll delete your account for you.
- Log out, edit your profile, or correct/delete individual contributions in the app.
- Location is permission-based and can be declined or revoked in your device settings.
- Waitlist email includes an unsubscribe link; you can also email us to be removed.
- You may also email jdouglas@grocerysnitch.com to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, and we will honor verified requests within a reasonable time. While comprehensive state privacy laws do not currently apply to a business of our size, we extend these choices to all users.
7. Security and breach response
We use industry-standard protections: encryption in transit, encryption at rest for sensitive on-device data, private storage with restricted access for receipt images, and row-level access controls so users can only reach their own private data. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
If we learn of a security breach affecting your personal information, we will investigate, take steps to contain it, and notify affected users and authorities as required by applicable law (including Florida's Information Protection Act, § 501.171) without unreasonable delay.
8. Data retention
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Account info, pantry/recipes/lists, contribution history | Life of your account; deleted on account deletion |
| Receipt and recipe images | Life of your account; hard-deleted on account deletion |
| Contributed prices (product, store, price, date) | Retained anonymized after account deletion (§4) |
| Terms-acceptance record (account ID, Terms version, acceptance time) | Retained as a legal record of assent, including after account deletion |
| Waitlist emails | Until you unsubscribe, create an account, or 12 months after the beta program ends, whichever comes first |
| Server/diagnostic logs | Short-term operational retention, typically no more than 30 days |
| Records required for legal/accounting purposes | As required by law |
9. Age requirement (18+)
The Service is intended for adults 18 and older. Creating an account requires confirming you are at least 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a user is under 18, we will close the account and delete its personal data. The Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy; we'll revise the "Last updated" date and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice (such as an in-app notice or email).
